GMAT

Graduate Management Admission Test

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) measures general verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that are developed over a long period of time. It is designed to help graduate schools of business assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. GMAT scores are used by nearly 1,300 graduate management programs throughout the world and about 850 schools require GMAT scores from each applicant. GMAT scores are only one predictor of academic performance in the first year of graduate management school.

The GMAT does not presuppose any specific knowledge of business or of other specific content areas. It does not measure achievement in any particular subject area. International students should note that the GMAT is entirely in English and all instructions are provided in English.

The GMAT CAT

The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that is available, year-round, at test centers throughout the world.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER-ADAPTIVE TEST ?

In a computer-adaptive test, the computer screen displays one question at time, which is chosen from a very large pool of questions categorized by content and difficulty. The first question is always of medium difficulty. The selection of each question thereafter is determined by your responses to all previous questions. In other words the CAT adjusts to your ability level youll get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you.

The CAT requires you to enter an answer for each question and you may not return to or change your response to any previously answered question. If you guess a correct answer or answer a question incorrectly by mistake, your answers to subsequent questions will lead you back to questions that are at the appropriate leave of difficulty for you.

WHAT COMPUTER SKILLS DO NEED ?

Minimal computer skills required to complete the GMAT CAT. Before beginning the test youll complete a tutorial that covers using a mouse, entering a response, using the word processor, accessing the help function, and moving on to the next question,. Youll also be able to access the help function at any time during testing.

WHAT ARE CONDITIONS LIKE AT A TEST CENTER ?

The CAT is administered in an individualized environment in the quite and privacy of separated testing stations. You will have the opportunity to take two five-minute breaks, one after completing the essays and another between the quantitative and verbal sections.

INTERNATIONAL LOCATIONS

You may register for the GMAT by phone, fax, or mail. Contact the Regional Registration Center (RRC) to schedule your CAT appointment. RCC for India

Selecting Your Score Report Recipient (s)

Before you begin to take the test, you will have an opportunity to select up to five graduate schools that will receive copies of your score report. The list of graduate schools is in alphabetical order. Please note that graduate schools are listed under the name of the college or university with which they are associated, e.g., Baruch College is listed as CUNY, Baruch College. You should also be aware that abbreviations are used, e.g., the United States Air Force Academy is listed as US Air Force Academy.

If you cannot locate your graduate school on the list and the institution has instructed you to submit your GMAT scores as part of their application process ask the rest administrator for a GMAT Score Report Request Form. Complete this form and return it to the test administrator before you leave the center.

Getting Your Scores

Upon completing the computer-adaptive GMAT, you can choose to see your scores at the test center for the multiple-choice sections of the test. An official score report, including scores for the Analytical Writing Assessment will be mailed to you and your designated institutions about two weeks after testing. If you do not finish the multiple-choice sections, you will get a score that reflects the portion of the test that you completed.

You must respond to both essays and multiple choice section of the test to get an official score report. Absences from the test and cancellations of scores will also be reported.

Canceling You Scores

Scores will not be canceled at your request for any reason once they have been reported. However, ETS will honor your request to cancel scores immediately after the test administration Indicate your decision to cancel on the computer screen immediately following the last section of the test.

Repeating the Test

You may not take the GMAT more than one time in any calendar month even if you have taken the test and canceled your scores. If you test more than once in a calendar month, your new scores will not be reported and your test fee will be forfeited.

Sometimes it is necessary to take the GMAT more than one time. For example, a management school may request more recent scores than you currently have on record. However unless your scores seem unusually low compared with other indicators of your preparation for graduate management study or unless there are other reasons to believe that you did not do your best on a test for which scores have been reported taking the GMAT again may not be helpful. It is unlikely to result in a substantial increase in your scores. And in fact you scores may decrease.

If you repeat the test your scores from the latest test date and the two most recent test administrations taken In the last five years will be reported to the institutions you designate as score recipients. If you repeat the test and want to send scores to the same schools as for previous administrations you must re-enter the school codes where requested or submit a new Additional Score Report Request form.

Additional Score Reporting

Your test fee covers the release of your score report to up to five graduate schools selected by you on the day of the test. If you want to have your scores sent to more than five graduate schools or, if you later decide that you want your score report sent to other graduate schools , you must use the Additional Score Reporting Service. You will be charged a fee for each additional score report requested. Requests received without payment will be returned. Reports are processed within three working days after the request is received. You will receive a confirmation score report listing the additional institutions you requested.

To order, complete the "Additional Score Report Request"

Mail to the address on the form (must include payment or credit card information), or

Fax to ETS at 609-883-4349 (credit card required.)

Recipients indicated on an Additional Score Report Request form cannot be changed or deleted.

WHY MBA ??!

MBA helps one to blend business practices with theory & technical know-how thus helping evolution of Strategies that are ideal to provide a vibrant business environment. The most important advantage is that just after doing MBA it helps one to recognize the universality of application of management discipline to all walks of life which otherwise one may take years to understand the same and sometimes may not even be able to use it for betterment.

E.g.: - to accept the fact that human beings are dynamic in nature and that there are different ways to deal for same matter while dealing with different human beings. And most important even in recession period student from IIMs, XLRI, JBJMS, etc. A grade institutes are getting salary as much as 22 lack / annum and a pass out from STANFORD, WARTON, KALLOGES, HARWARD can dream for package of $100,000 /annum (44 lacks).

During MBA one comes across a good mix of Engineers, CAs, Accountants, Arts & Science graduates, managers and even students who are married and have children. Such a diverse profile creates a wealth of experience before even taking up the career. One thus learns to adapt, accept & respect people as they are. This helps team building, participating in-group activities and leading a group. Through some courses in behavioral sciences one also gets an opportunity to introspect himself/herself and realize ones self-worth. This helps in developing a sense of appreciation for others viewpoints besides building ones own level of self-confidence.

The three most important factors of managerial success are;

1>. The skills to understand nos. 2>. Investigate prowess 3>. Ability to look at issues from a multi-disciplinary angle.

Management Education in India.

Business courses are mushrooming across the country in numerous Universities as well as specialized schools. The quality of education of most of these is plummeting and doesnt fulfill the matrix of skill-set of the churned out M.B.As. with that of Corporate needs. This makes the demand for the true & specialized Business Schools sky-high. Under this scenario, students should be very-very careful to identify the correct institutes for the management-course they want to pursue and at the same time should get the correct exposure & means to get success through the ever getting tougher screening tests of these institutes.

MANAGEMENT THINKING IS NEVER STATIC.

There are no golden rules that you can apply to all Business Situations. In todays world Everything is Contextual. You have to anticipate CHANGE & provide Leadership to manage it as Survival hinges on the ability to implement CHANGE successfully, and while doing all this one needs to preserve his/her own value system.

In the light of Facts that today Business environment doesnt behave an orderly pattern, casual relationships are not stable, predictable or linear, one therefore cannot overcome the problem with application of deterministic solution on experience of past. On the contrary, real-life situations are chaotic, offer complex correlation between variables & lead to probabilistic outcomes. Business is not just problem solving. As known, there just cannot be only one way to do a particular thing. It needs lateral thinking to generate more efficient ways of doing things. Innovation based on creative & lateral thinking is therefore very much required as it plays a key role in successful business practices. While hands-on expertise is vital, conceptual soundness is imperative in the real world of business. At the same time one not only needs to make a change in business or any practice but also to establish it.

Today managers have to predict uncertain events with greater accuracy and respond creatively to a dynamic environment. He has to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the entire organization in order to perform consistently and thereby provides desired results.

To become an Effective Manager one has to acquire a varied set of skills. MBA helps one to gain foothold in an organization. Once inside, he/she learns to superimpose practical techniques on conceptual skills.

Exposure to Global environment.

The world is moving towards a global order in which there is going to be a greater interdependence of material and regional economies. Such a world order has to be based on harmony at the macro level.

Western growth has generally not recognized or experienced resource constraints and has based its ethos on the philosophy of INDIVIDULISM. This has led to the development of fierce competitiveness as a way of life. The Indian context on the contrary is different. The social fabric is rooted in the values of the extended family. COLLABORATIONS are a Normal Phenomenon, Through collaborative efforts it is possible to optimize the use of limited resources, bargain for the Wests B est leading to a more appropriate balance in growth.

MANAGEMENT EDUCATION IN INDIA

Gateway to a promising career

The complexities of managing modern industrial units and their attendant problem calls for finely honed managerial skills. In India the post liberalization phase has resulted in a steady and sustained release of entrepreneurial skills and professions all of which calls for skilful management of resources, both human and natural. While the developed countries of the world have institutionalized the concept of management education and have elevated it to a fine art our own Hindustan is also catching up fast. The first independent, full-fledged independent management school was set up thirty-seven years ago in Calcutta where the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was set up in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the early sixties, the government created the Indian Institutes of Management at Calcutta and Ahmedabad whose underlying objective was to provide pre-career education, executive training research and consultancy in management. Working as autonomous institutions but with financial support coming from the government these institutions provided an atmosphere of freedom and flexibility and encouraged learning at all levels. An attempt was also made to develop indigenous case studies in various core and functional areas of management. The successful experience of the IIMs at Calcutta and Ahmedabad resulted in the creation of similar institutions at Bangalore and Lucknow. Today, there is six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) with Kozhikode and Indore being the latest entrants. In addition to the IIMs, there are more than 75 university departments and autonomous institutions offering full time and part-time post-graduate education in management as well as short-duration executive development programs. In addition to IIMs and University-based departments of Management there are also a large number of institutions which provide specialized management education to suit the needs of managers in specific sectors such as rural management, health and family welfare, construction banking small industry tourism management public administration and foreign trade. Various ministries of government of Indian have created almost all these institutions. In addition to providing executive development programs to Indian managers, they also provide training to managers coming from Asian and African countries.

The professional associations like the All India Management Association, National Productivity Council and their local chapters, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, YMCA, etc offer continuing education and management development programs at all levels. A feature of the Indian management education system is the existence of a large number of in house training set-ups both in the public and private sector. Most of these in-house training centers have strong faculty links with the other institutions of management education and provide larger-scale training to their managers. Of late, some private consulting firms have also started offering training programs in the area of general management and other functional areas of management, Over the last decade management education has emerged as one of the most exciting and sought after careers challenging the traditional and staid careers of engineering and medicine. Believed to be equipped with an assortment of managerial skills, graduates armed with MBA degrees from specialized institutes are eagerly lapped up by high-profile corporate groups and offered unprecedented entry level pay packages that can turn engineers and doctors green with envy.

Trends and Challenges in Management Education

Trends

(i) Noting the unprecedented boom in demand for management education and courses, several Aptitude Testing Services have been available to students. Apart from the Common Admission Test for the IIMs (which is in a league of its own) the other leading ones amongst these are that of All India Management Associations Management Aptitude Test (MAT) and the G - INDO - MAT. Various Management Institutes participate in these combined tests to admit students for their Management Programs. Thus the students can apply to various institutes by appearing in a single test. The combined Management entrance tests are being also organized on state-level basis. The states, which conduct these tests, include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan & Uttar Pradesh.

(ii) Various technology institutes have also started their own management programs. Premier among these are courses offered by IIT Delhi, Vinod Gupta Institute of Management - IIT Kharagpur National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani & Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

(iii) The concept of dual qualification has emerged with the introduction of CFA-MBA joint program of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India, Hyderabad.

(iv) Recently, several industrial and business organizations have set up their own management institutes. (Earlier, only the Tata Institute of Social Sciences & JBIMS Mumbai existed). Some of the others are:

1. J.K. Groups Dr. Gaur Hari Singhania Institute of Management & Research Kanpur.

2. Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad

3. The Times of India Groups times School of Marketing, New Delhi

4. Nirma Institute of Management, Ahmedabed

5. Modi Groups Centre for Management Development, Modinagar.

6. Usha Groups Integrated Institute of Learning in Management, New Delhi

7. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow

8. Dewan Institute of Management Meerut.

9. Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Haripur (Karnataka)

Challenges

The rapid pace with which the Indian economy is globalising has necessitated the need for a new breed of managers who should be able to think, conceptualize and implement strategies in multi cultural contexts. Although the premier management institutes are gearing up to meet this challenge, the second line of management schools are struggling to reorient their academic programs and faculties towards this new reality. In addition to constraints on resource faculty, most institutes are ill equipped with poor libraries.

It is also being increasingly felt, that at present, there is a lot of adhocism in management entrance tests especially those that are not conducted through standardized All India tests like CAT & MAT. Since professional management needs special aptitude to become leaders and decision makers, it is important that stringent norms are applied for recruitment and dubious entrance of sponsored candidates are nipped in the bud.

One also has to be cautious about the influence of foreign universities who are eyeing the huge education market in India with none too noble intentions. A system is required to publicize the rating and credibility of such institutions so that parents and students are not led the garden path into the realm of illusion and frustration.

At the risk of reputation, it must be reiterated that the next question attached to an MBA degree is where it comes from. Management education today, is unfortunately seen as one more avenue of a business venture by many. No wonder then that new management institutions pop up like popcorns and fleece the gullible public. Most of them do not match up to the high standards, which they advertise and charge hefty fees.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the apex body for higher professional education in India and it is mandatory for all post graduation Management Courses to be approved by AICTE. Nevertheless, many management institutes brazenly carry on without such approval.

The Course

At the PostGraduate level there are a plethora of Institutes, which offer courses in Management. The most sought after qualification at this level is the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree (awarded by Universities) or PostGraduate Diploma in Management (PGDBM) awarded by some of the reputed institutes.

The duration of the Full Time MBA/PGDBM Program is two years, while that of the Part Time program is three years. The eligibility for the PostGraduate courses at mos t Management institutes is a Bachelors Degree in any discipline with minimum 50% marks. (45% for SC/ST candidates in Govt. Govt. Sponsored Institutes & Universities). However, the Indian Institute of Management (HM), Ahmedabed asks for just a Bachelors degree in any discipline. There is no consideration for percentage.

Admission Procedure

The admission to these courses is through a Written Test, followed by a Group Discussion and an Interview.

The MBA entrance tests constitute the following critical sections (An institute may include all or some of these sections in its Entrance Exam).

Written tests

1. Verbal Ability

2. Reading Comprehension

3. Elementary Mathematics

4. Data Interpretation

5. Data Sufficiency

6. Logical and Analytical Reasoning

7. Awareness of Business & Economic Environment

8. General Awareness

The last three sections do not appear in the Common Admission Test (CAT) for IIMs and other Institutes (MDI Gurgaon, IISWBN Calcutta, TAPMI Manipal, MIC Ahmedabad & IMDR Pune).

What is thought in an MBA Program?

An MBA program generally comprises of four important elements:

1. Foundation Course relating to Principles of Management, Organizational Behavior, Business Laws, Quantitative Techniques Accountancy, Managerial Economics etc.

2. Courses relating to specific functional areas such as Marketing, Finance, Human Resources Management, Production etc.

3. Courses relating to understanding of Business Environment & Current Business and Economic Scenario.

4. Courses related to Strategic Management and Business Policy.

The Management Institutes generally impart education through Case- Study method and Presentations, Seminars etc. in all the above areas of study.

The course structure of a typical MBA program

There are three broad areas:

1. Curriculum

2. Structure

3. Teaching methods

We shall briefly discuss only the curriculum

Curriculum

Most MBA programs have four basic elements

Foundation courses

Environmental analysis

Functional skills

Integrative courses

Foundation courses

The foundation courses include subject like economics, statistics, mathematics and data processing. These skills are part of the basic tool kit for the study of professional management, which include behavioral courses

Environmental Analysis

Environment here means the legal and social environment in which the business operates. Student is made aware of government rules, ethics and norms.

Learning Functional Skills

Functional skills include finance, banking, production management, and operative research. Generally, familiar with these requires to every MBA student. In the second year, a student is required to choose one or two areas to specialize.

Integrative courses

The skills and theory part, which are thought separately, are integrated through specially designed courses, which form the integrative courses.

Cost of MBA education

Compared to the initial Iucraticve placements an MBA graduate from any prestigious institute is offered, the cost of education appears reasonable. In India, the cost would amount to about 50,000 a year. Depending on his/her qualifications and work experience, a student gets a fellowship of either Rs. 1800 of Rs. 2400 a month. Also a student is given an annual contingency allowance of Rs 5000.

What expected from a MBA student?

A MBA graduate is expected to work in most challenging conditions where he has to consider the theoretical and practical applications of the situation and find solutions accordingly. He/she has to evolve a balance between theory and practice

Prospects

An MBA graduate from a prestigious institute from has the privilege of selecting his employer rather than the employer selecting them. Fresh MBA graduates are so much in demand that prospective employers queue up to snap them as soon as they come out of college.

pecializations

Broadly, MBA students can specialize in any of the following streams

1. Marketing

2. Human Resources

3. Finance

4. Systems

5. Production

Marketing

This specialization includes areas like

1. Sales and Distribution

2. Product/Brand Management

3. Advertising

4. Market Research

Sales and Product Management offers wide scope. Advertising and Market Research are activities that are highly specialized.

Human Resource Management

Its is perhaps the fastest growing specialization in India today.

There are three broad areas in this field

1. Human Resource Development

2. Personnel Management

3. Industrial Relations

An HRD executive is involved in improving the morale of the employees, performance appraisal and increasing overall human productivity. A personnel executive is involved in normal day-to-day activities like recruitment salary management, welfare of employees etc. An executive specializing in Industrial Relations focuses on labor management. Students with a law background are preferred for this functional area.

Finance Management

MBAs in this discipline are considered similar to Chartered Accountants. Specialization in this discipline branches out in various paths, viz. consumer banking, institutional banking, developmental banking and the like. Business acumen and a keen grasp of financial laws are essential pre-requisites for this.

Systems Management

In a Systems Management course, the student learns all the functions of an organization, in addition to the knowledge of computers. There is tendency to view the system management course as another computer course, but in reality the systems analyst works on providing all round solutions while the work of the computer specialist is much narrower.

Production management

The focus of the production specialist is not on problems related to engineering, but on managerial implications of such problems and the techniques are largely applied to manufacturing organizations.

Forestry management

Forestry management is the specialist discipline, which undertakes the possibility of managing forestry, and forest related systems in the country. The forestry management experts are trained to carry out research in developmental aspects of forestry throughout the country. Rural management is the specialized function required for rural enterprise, especially, producers cooperatives with modern processing units.

SYLLABUS FOR MBA ENTRANCE TESTS

The MBA entrance tests aim to test the students

(1) English Usage: Language Proficiency, Reading Comprehension

(2) Quantitative Ability: Speed and Accuracy

And (3) Time Management Skills

The structure of the test has been designed keeping these parameters in mind. In almost all the cases the questions have Multiple Choices to choose an answer from.

The components of these tests are as

1. READING COMPREHENSION (RC)

This section consists of passage followed by questions. These passages are usually extracts from Newspapers, Magazines, Novels and Books and cover wide spectra of topics. The length of passages very form exam to exam CAT 98 consist of average 3-4 pages RC .FMS 99 had five passages respectively of order of 7,6,5,4,3 and 2 The questions could be inferential or factual but are limited to the scope of the passage. The key to this section is only developing a regular reading habit especially of novels can develop a good reading speed, which.

2. QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE (QA)

The section generally covers basic mathematics (Xth Standard). The topics covered are: Number theory, Percentages, Average Ratio and Proportion, Profit and Loss, Mixtures, Races, Partnerships, Geometry Menstruation, Basic Algebra, Quadratic Equations, Progressions, Permutation and Combinations, Set theory etc. The questions asked in the test stress more on the student reasoning skills rather than just the computational skills. A clear understanding of the basic concepts which comes through sheer should easily help even a non-Maths background student to gain comfortable mastery over these topics. Trend in pattern of CAT has been observed that maths is no more simple maths but it is more logical . For XLRI

3. DATA INTERPRETATIN (DI)

The section tests your skill in understanding and interpreting data presented in different forms such as Bar graphs, Line graphs, Pie charts, etc. The objective is to test the comfort with data depictions and the ability to generate approximations from the data.

4. ENGLISH USAGE (EU)

Verbal ability of English Usage (EU) is the section that tests the proficiency in English per se. Typical questions comprise synonym relations, Sentence Sequencing, Sentence Correction, Fill-in-the-blanks, Verbal Analogies, Verbal Reasoning, Vocabulary etc. The necessary condition start would be to begin with wordlists.

5. LOGICAL REASONING / DATA SUFFICIENCY (LR/DS)

Logical reasoning questions aim to check your ability to cull out data, organize it and reach logical conclusions for the relevant questions. On the other hand the Data sufficiency questions checks ones conceptual clarity about the situation and the ability to reach a conclusion given certain conditions.

6. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE (GK)

The general knowledge questions cover mainly current events. This section is not a part of CAT and some other tests. General awareness essentially looks at your sensitivity to the events happening around you.

PREPARATION FOR THE MBA ENTRANCE TESTS

WRITTEN ROUND

1. QUANTITATIVE ABILITY:

The level of Maths in MBA entrance exams is of X standard with a couple of topic from higher Maths. Hence a student can begin with the books prescribed for the IX and X standard. These books offer a firm bas in fundamentals and have practice assignments at the end of each topic. A month of intensive work can lay the foundation for further preparation.

The Maths tests expect a student to attempt about 45 objective questions in 30 minutes. Hence one must along with clearing ones fundamentals, focus on increasing speed also, without sacrificing accuracy. Towards this end one should:

a) Learn tables unto 30 (i.e. 30 x 30).

b) Memorize the values of reciprocals, squares, cubes, square roots and cube roots of numbers unto 30.

c) Memorize the basic formulae e.g. (a+b)2, (a+b)3, (a+b+c)2, etc.

d) Learn to approximate your calculations since a large number of questions dont require exact calculations but very large and approximate calculations.

e) Stop using calculators and get in the habit of doing all calculations mentally. Initially you will find it difficult but this will help you save lot of precious time in the tests.

2. ENGLISH:

A candidates proficiency of English is checked via two different sections. They are

1. English Usage

2. Reading Comprehension

Familiarity with English Language, Vocabulary, Knowledge of basic grammar, Reading & comprehension skills, Reasoning power.

To start off in the first place every student must make reading newspapers, magazines, books, and an integral part of his daily routine. This improves the familiarity with English and the ability to judge and construct sentence structure correctly besides the obvious i.e., speeding up the reading speed.

3. CURRNT AFFAIRS:

One needs to work for 6-8 months to have a good knowledge of current affairs. The best way of improving in this area is to read at least one good English newspaper regularly and to supplement it with a current affairs magazine. If possible one should read either a business newspaper or magazine also .Pattern of this year99 exams like XLRI,HCMRD,S.P. JAIN reflects the necessity of reading E.T. regularly A good current affairs magazine is essential since it not only reinforces whatever you read in the newspapers in the course of the week but also adds to your knowledge base.

In the newspaper one should focus on the front page, editorial page, business page and the sports page. All newspapers have supplements or pages on various subjects like sports, business, advertising, science & technology, on different days; these are a good source of information. The Sunday magazine of newspapers also provides good reading material.

The biggest advantage of reading newspapers & magazines regularly is that along with improving your General Knowledge it provides good practice for reading comprehension and helps in building up your vocabulary.

PERSONALITY ASSESMENT ROUND

For the post written round of selection the emphasis shifts to your Personality. This round comprises Group Discussions, Extempore, Case Studies and most importantly Personal Interviews. Hence you need to build up your general awareness and brush up the fundamentals in your own subjects. Apart from this you must concentrate your efforts on improving your communication skills (esp. for those of you who feel uncomfortable when speaking in public.)

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There are three different issues which determine the career of management graduates. These are:

-- The Institute

-- The Specialisation

-- The Organisatin

The Institute:

The M.B.A. is a career oriented courses. In accordance with this almost all the institutes have a placement cell whose objective is to get companies to make offers to their students. The relative effectiveness of these cells varies from institute to institute.

Briefly, the larger and better known schools, especially the IIMs, XLRI, JBIMS, and FMS get the pick of the jobs Foreign banks, multinational companies, large Indian companies etc. all vie for the graduates from these institutions e.g. IIM-Ahmedabad routinely turns away about 50 companies without any graduate accepting jobs from them.

The less well known institutes normally attract offers from local companies. but not as remunerative.

The Specialisation:

This is the key bariable and a lot depends on your interests and capabilities, as well as the institutes resources. We will consider each specialisation in some detail. This should also help you get an outline of the functional areas.

M.B.A. students can specialise in any of the following streams:

* Marketing * Finance

* Human Resources * Systems

* Production

Marketing:

Marketing in its broadest sence is getting people and products together. This is the most popular area among students of management. There are four specific functions which comprise this area:

Sales & Distribution

Product/Brand Management

Advertising

Market Research

The opportunities in Sales and Product Management are wide. However most organisations prefer their trainees to get sales experience before joining product management. The range of organisations is wide and includes all types of organisations.

Advertising and market research are service sector activities. These organisations are highly specialised consultancies. In India, we have a large number of small abencies, (which may not be the best place to start a career) and a small number of large agencies, often which foreign tie-ups. It is important to remember that the largest agency is around Rs. 100 crores in turnover which is small by other industry standards. Most of the large and professional have well developed department for advertising and market rsearch.

Finance:

This function is concerned with the efficient use of the basic raw material for business -- money. MBAs in this discipline face competition from CAs -- but also learn a lot more than what a normal CA does. Thus, in medium term an equally bright MBA would have an advantage over his CA colleague. There are seven career paths in this discipline:

Consumer banking
Investment banking
Institutional banking
Merchant banking
Development banking
Non Banking Finance
Corporate Finance

Consumer banking, investment banking, and institutional banking are usually carried out by the same institution. These cover, respectively individual accounts, the management of securities(and other investments including foreign exchange dealings) and lending to corporate clients. These functions tend to be very specialised.

Most banks nowadays also have merchant banking subsidiaries or divisions. These largely focus on public issues of capital by organisations. This field had also seen several non-bank firms entering but their viability currently seems doubtful. While in the other three banking areas described above (i.e. consumer/investment/institutional) the foreign banks are the most aggresive and creative, the merchant banking divisions of Indian banks are currently rated as the best.

Development banking is the purview of specialised institutions set up for this purpose e.g. ICICI, IDBI, IFCI etc. The mandate is to help the economy grow by aiding industrial growth. The focus here is very different from traditional banking and is extremely challenging.

Non banking finance is of two types. One set is through (usually) small pricately fun specialised companies. These include companies invoived in leasing, hire purchase, or provate banks. The other is through specialised public sector institutions concentrating on shipping finance, housing finance, venture capital etc.

The corporate route is also open. Companies need in-house experties and often have large departments to do cost-control, financial planning, and accountancy. These can also offer challenging careers.

Houmn Resources:

There are there broad career opportunities in this area. It is important to note that this area is probably the fastest growing specialisation in India today. The three areas are:

Human Resource Development
Personnel Management
Industrual Relations

An HRD executive is involved with activities like perforrmance appraisal, employee counseling, employee training and employee motivatin. His activities are directed towards development of the people in his organisation.

A personnel executives focus is different. He is involved in normal day to day activities like recruitment, job definition, salary management and employee welfare. Most organizations,in recent times, differentiate between personnel and HRD managers.

Industrial relations focuses of labour management. With the increasing activitiy of labour/staff unions, often with the backing of political parties, organisations have developed a need for specialists in handling union related activities. Normally students who have a law bacground are preferred for this functional area.
Systems Management:

For M.B.A.s who have specialised in systems, the job market is booming. There are broad career options in this field:

Computer manufacturing/selling organisations

Systems consultancy organisations

Systems departments of organisations

It is important to understand the diference between a systems person and a computer perrson. The key difference is the type of skill needed. While systems specialists will work on understanding a problem and then resolving it, the focus of the computer specialist is narrower and more technical. The computer specialist would know about software and hardware of certain types. However the MBA, in the course of his programme, would have learnt about all the functions of an organisation, in addition to computer knowledge. Hence the systems MBA, unlike a computer engineer, is equipped to design systems for many types of organisation.

To specialize in systems one doesnt need prior experience in computers or engineering. However, in smaller institutes, thismight be desirable for placement.

Production:

Manufacturing is one of the most important areas for any product based business. Many techniques and theories have been developed by management schools which focus on issues relevant to this area. These skills are specially useful to those who are engineering graduates. The four types of opportunities are in:

Productivity Improvement

Quality Control

Inventory Control

Production Planning

The focus of the production specialist is not on engineering problems, but on the managerial implications of engineering problems. The specific skills required are behavioural, technical, and statistical.

These techniques are largely applied to manufacturing organisations. There are few consultancy organisations in this area, and most do not offer attractive career opportunities to M.B.A.s.

Conclusion:

The range of careers open to management graduates is definitely more extensive than what we have described above. The preceding note had the limited objective of giving you the broad outline of opportunities available. The actual opportunities are restricted by your imagination and aring. It would be useful for you to get in touch with any expert in the areas described to get an indepth picture of any stream or discipline. Also, please remember that the classifications are neither exhaustive nor watertight.

Entrepreneurship is one option not covered above, but increasingly important for students of the better management institutes IIM-A runs a special second year concentration packege for entrepreneurs, and other schools offer special courses. This is a very exciting, challenging, and rewarding option that you should consider while planning you career.

The Organizatin:

Organizations can be classified by the nature of their business. The three broad areas are:

* Consumer Product

* Industrial Product

* Service Sector

The difference between these types is important. A brief description.

Consumer Product: The focus of these organisations is to sell products to individual consumers. A wide range of products comes in this category like soaps, toothpastes, fire extinguishers, bathroom fixtures, motorcycles. VCRs and many others. Some distinguishing features of this type of organisation are disaggregated markets, a need for mass media avdertising, a large sales force, and a relatively low value item.

Industrial Products: The focus of these organisations is selling products to other organisations. A wide range of products comes in this category like forgings. EPABX sets, plastics, chemicals, computers power plants etc. Some distinguishing features of this type of organisation are complex or unique products, high after-sales service requirements, a specialised audience, personal selling, and high value orders.

Service Sector: Many organisations do not produce a tangible product, but perform a valuable function. Common examples of such service organisations are banks, agents, and accountants. This sector also includes industries like exports, advertising, software, consultancy, and even the Planning Commission. Some of the important characteristics of such organisations are their people intensive nature, the high skills required, and the intangible nature of the final output. In India the lack of infrastructure for communications and data availability is a serious hindrance to the development of this sector.

This classification is not watertight. Most large organisations in India are extensively diversified. Also, public sector organisations often have different approaches depending on the focus of that part of the organisation. So it is not enough to know the organisation, it is also important to know what part of it youll be working in.

Other important classifications are done on the basis of size, or on the level of professionalisation, or on the industry it belongs to. The matching of these to your competence and maturity is beyond the scope of this note.

tests is your vacation at the end of the last-but-one year of your studies. Though a period of 3-4 months is enough to master the quantitative areas in these tests (especially, if you train yourself on the difficulty level of IIM standards). many Indian students find mastering the verbal areas such as Reading and Vocabulary, rather slow going. Since the verbal areas make for slow learning, you would do well to start these as early as possible say, five to six months before the test.

As for how to prepare, the Note Analysing the Test Formats gives you compllete details.

Two points more about these tests: first apply as early as possible. If your application reaches late when all the seats at your nearest centre are full up, you may be allotted a far away place for a centre. Perhaps under the assumption that mobility is as easy in our country, as it is in America, the test administrators might ask you to appear at a centre just about 700 kms. away from your hometown. Dont let this happen to you.

Next, many students who take GRE want to work in industry after completing their M.S. It is at that juncture they begin to feel the need for an MBA. If you feel that such a possibility might arise in your case, you would do well to take the GMAT allong with your GRE. First, the tests need similar aptitude except in one or two areas. Secondly, you need not undergo the hassle of preparing for GMAT again; the scores are valid for 5 years.

(10). Completing Application Form & Despatch: Your admission to most American universities will depend on the following things:

1. Your academic record.

2. High motivation towards completion of your academic goals,

3. Recommendation you have secured; and

4. Your test scores.

The manner in which you answer the questions in your application form is very important. The applicationl forms of many universities contain questions which require you to write long essay type answers. The questions might range from you personal likes and dislikes to your idea about the state of the world ten years hence. These essays need to be written very carefullly. After writing them, you would do well to get them checked by someone whose commonsense and English grammar, you have reasons to believe are superior tok yours. You can be sure your essays will be read carefully by the carefully by the admissions authorities and will serve as an important criteria for your selection.

Students who seek admissionk to courses other than managment have to write a Statementk of Purpose. In these, several youngsters end up making pompous and hollow statements and appear to set for themselves frighteningly unrealistic purposes. Remember, the statement just requires you to answer 3 or 4 very simple questions, such as, what are your objectives in learning and life, what makes you to select the course you wish to seek admission to how are your academic goal realted to your professional ambitions, and what do you seek to achieve in your professional life.

Recommendations also play an important part. Ordinarily you are required to submit recommendations from two people: one of these should necessarily be from your professor. Another, you would do well to take from some-one who has completed part of his education in the USA.Many Indian professors are pronej to writing recommendations which begin with "This is to certify ..... and end with.... He/She bears a good moral character." While morals are important, a recommendation of this sort does not reveal anything. A credible recommendation evaluates the student, his aptitude, his strengths and weaknesses as a student and as a person. It ranks him and probes into his potential as a learner and a doer.

(11). Costs, Financial Aid and RBI Regulations: Financial aid programs at the undergraduate level are generally funded by the Federal Goverment. Citizens of foreign Countries are not eligible to apply for these funds. Any aid they receive must come from the institution or college. Institutional aid is given in the form of full or partial scholarships. Since competition for these schollarships (which are limited in number) is stiff, only extremely talented individuals receive them. At the graduate level there are two types of aid:

(i). Fellowships (or scholarships)

(ii). Work Programs

Fellowships are outright awards which require no service in return. Often they provide a stipend for living expense besides meeting tuition costs. These are highly prestigious awards.

Work programs include teaching assistantships and research assistanships, which require the recipient to provide a service to the university in return for a stipend. Often tuition fees are saived or reimbursed.

Teaching Assistantships: If you pursue an advanced degree in a subject that is also offered at the underg -graduate level -- for example, in the arts and sciences -- you may have a good chance of securing a teaching assistantship. Such a position may involve delivering lectures, correcting classwork. grading papers, counselling students and supervising laboratory groups: usually about 20 hours of work is required per week.

Teaching assistantships provide exvellent educational experience as well as financial aid. A stipend (usually considered taxable income) is generally paid and sometimes tuition is provided or waived as well. Appointments are based on academic qualifications and ones ability to communicate ideas effectively in English to an American audience, and are subject to the availability of funds, within a department. If you are interested you should contact the department member who appoints teaching assistans Ordinarily you not considered for such positions until you have been admitted to a program at the graduate level.

Research Assistantships: Research assistantships usually require the student to assist in the research activities of a faculty member. Appointments are ordinarily made for the academic year. They are reaely offered to first-year students. You should contact the concemed department describing your particular research interests. As is the case with teaching assistantships, research assistantshipa provid excellent academic training as well as practical experience and financial support.

Generally, funding for foreign students is very limited, Foreign applicats have to compete with capable U.S. students for most financial aid awards. Although financial need is taken into consideration, the most important factor in stlectionk is academic merit.

The availability of financial assistance varies from field to field. There is more aid in the natural and applied sciences and in engineering as compared to the humanities and social science. There is very little aid in professional fields such as law, business, medicine and dentistry. Also at the Ph.D. level there are more possibilities for financial assistance than at the masters level.

For detailed information about financial aid, you should refer to the following books available at the USEFI.

(i). Graduate Programme and Admissions Manual.

(ii) The Hand Book of International Study for Foreign Nationals.

With regard to costs of education, you should also note that they could range form $12,000 to over $25,000 per year (1992). The average total expense at a majority of U.S. institutions would be approximately $26,000

Normally the RBI releases the needed foreign exchange to enrol in graduate programmes if you have secured at least 55% in your Bachelors or Masters degree examination. The RBI does not release foreign exchange for undergraduate education if such education is available in India. If you could obtain funding from sources outside India to finance your studies, however, you can go to the U.S. for your undergraduate studies after completing a HIgher Secondary Certificate or its equivalent.

(12). Things to do After you get Admission: As soon as you receive admission parpers along with form I 20 from an university:

1. approach the RBI in your state for a permit that will enable you to transfer funds from India to the US. (if applicable).

2. obtaink information on visa from the US Consulate nearest to you and fulfill all their requirements.

3. make application for visa sufficiently early but not before ninety days from the date of the commencement of the semester as mentioned in your I-20.

4. If possible, register for pre-departure orientation conducted by USEFIs regional office nearest to you which would prepare you for the many challenges that you may face during your stay in the US.

Normally, if you apply for a visa in person with all the required documents at the US Consulate nearest you, you will be informed of their decision of the same day. If however, you are rejected twice in person and decide to apply by mail it could take ten working days or more to hear from them.

Generally, if you are sponsored by your family, the university will send you a form (I-20) with which you could apply for a student (F-1) visa. On the other hand, if you are sponsored by your government, or a private sponsoring agency (e.g. Rotary Foundating) you may receive a form called IAP-66 from the university with which you may apply for an Exchange Visitor (J-1) visa.
